Dear Friends,

In several of my sermons I have made reference to confessing God’s word to bring about change. There are numerous passages of scripture which help clarify why it is so important to make God’s words our own. Here are four:

God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high (Hebrews 1:1-3)

For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven. (Psalm 119:89)

So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it. (Isaiah 55:11)

Can two walk together, except they be agreed? (Amos 3:3)

Briefly, what we see in these verses is:

It is the power of God’s word which sustains creation.

God’s word is His will and it will never change.

God’s word will accomplish His will.

I cannot walk in 100% fellowship with God unless I live by all of His word.

All of this being true, it is to our benefit as children of the Creator to utilize His words in what we say, pray and confess because His words have creative power. After all, how can we possibly go wrong by confessing what God has said? I readily admit that confessing God’s word will not control the will of another person; but our confession of His will can impact the circumstances in a person’s life.

Every so often when people hear me speak about confessing scripture, they ask how this is done. What they want to know is how to turn God’s word into viable confessions. The following are examples of how to develop confessions using scripture (all of these are based on the King James Version). These particular examples are confessions I pray over myself and those who are part of this ministry. I encourage you to open your Bible and follow along, comparing the confessions to what is written.

EPHESIANS 1:15-23

Father, I thank you that we live by faith in Jesus and walk in love toward all others. I thank you for those who are a part of this ministry and I lift us all up to you. Please continue giving unto us the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of you. I declare that the eyes of our understanding are enlightened and that we know what is the hope of your calling and the riches of the glory of your inheritance in us.

I say that we know and understand the exceeding greatness of your power toward us who believe, according to the working of your mighty power which you wrought in Christ when you raised Him from the dead, and set Him at your own right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come.

You have put all things under Jesus’ feet, and gave Him to be the head over all things to us, your church, His body, the fullness of Him that filleth all in all.

EPHESIANS 3:14-21

Oh, God, I bow my knees unto you, for you are the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named.

I thank you for continually granting unto us, according to the riches of your glory, to be strengthened with might by your Spirit in our inner man.

I declare that Christ dwells in our hearts by faith and that we are rooted and grounded in your perfect, eternal love.

By the glory, might and strength in us, we daily increase in our comprehension of the breadth, length, depth and intimate knowledge of the love of Christ, which passes knowledge, and that we are filled with all your fullness.

You constantly do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think according to the power that worketh in us.

Unto you be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end.

COLOSSIANS 1:9-14

Father, I pray for all those who are associated with this ministry and desire that we would be filled with the knowledge of your will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding.

I say that we walk worthy of you, Lord, unto all pleasing. We are fruitful in every work you ordain for us to complete and we increase in the knowledge of you.

I thank you for strengthening us with all might, according to your glorious power, unto all patience, longsuffering and joyfulness.

You have made us fully qualified to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light.

You have delivered us from the power of darkness, and translated us into the kingdom of your dear Son. In Him we have redemption through His blood, even the forgiveness of sins.

PSALM 91

Father, we dwell in the secret place of the Most High and we abide under the shadow of the Almighty. You are our refuge and our fortress. You are our God and in you do we trust.

You deliver us from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. You cover us with your feathers, and under your wings do we trust: your truth is our shield and buckler.

We are not afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. A thousand shall fall at our side , and ten thousand at our right hand; but it shall not come near us. Only with our eyes shall we behold and see the reward of the wicked.

Lord, you are the Most High and we have made you our refuge and our habitation. There shall no evil befall us, neither shall any plague come near our dwelling.

You give your angels charge over us, to keep us in all our ways; they bear us up in their hands, lest we dash our foot against a stone.

We tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon do we trample under our feet.

We set our love upon you, and you deliver us: you set us on high, because we know your name. We call upon you, and you answer us: you are with us in trouble; you deliver and honor us. You satisfy us with long life, and you show us your salvation.

Another powerful aspect of confessing scripture has to do with worship. God moved upon men to put His word in writing. Throughout the Bible, especially in the Psalms, some of those writers penned beautiful verses of praise and worship to the Lord. It’s almost as though God was saying, “If you want to know how to worship me, I’ll give you some examples.” As with confession over circumstances, it is impossible to go wrong by incorporating scripture in your worship along with your own words of love and praise for Him. Sometimes you can use entire chapters; other times you can use portions of a chapter. To get a better idea of what I mean, compare the worship declarations below to the actual passages.

PSALM 93

O Lord, you reign. You are clothed with majesty; you are clothed and girded with strength. You have established the world and it cannot be moved. Your throne is established of old: you are from everlasting.

The floods have lifted up their voice and their waves unto you. You are the Lord on High and you are mightier than the noise of many waters or the mighty waves of the sea. Your testimonies are very sure: holiness becomes your house. You are the Lord, forever.

PSALM 63

O God, you are my God. I seek you and my very soul thirsts for you. Everything about me longs for you and to see the fullness of your power and your glory.

Your lovingkindness is better than life. I will praise you and bless you as long as I live. I lift my hand to worship your holy name. My very being is satisfied only with your presence. I open my mouth to praise you, and you fill me with joy.

As I lie down to sleep, even my mind rejoices to think and meditate upon you. You are my constant help and I rejoice exceedingly in the shadow of your glorious presence.

My soul lives to follow your leading, and you strengthen me. I am filled with joy in knowing that no one can steal my soul from you. They will fall; but you will keep me safe in your arms.

Jesus has made me a king unto you; but my rejoicing is in you alone. I commit my life unto you and you fill me with your glory.<

PSALM 66

O God, I make a joyful noise unto you and praise you. I sing unto the honor of your name and praise you, for you are glorious. You do incredible works and through the greatness of your power all devils are defeated and even they will declare your Lordship. The day is coming when the whole earth will praise your holy name.

I praise you for the great and mighty works you have done in my life. I rejoice in your deliverance. You rule by your holy power forever and no one can rise above you.

Jesus, I love you so much and I do not care who hears me as I praise you. You have given life to my soul and you are my strong foundation. I am pure as you work in me by the fire of your holiness. You deliver me from the evil plans of men ad Satan, and give me the fullness of your Kingdom.  Your presence is my dwelling place and I worship you with my lips, even when I face adversity.

I give to you the sacrifice of praise and with my mouth I will declare all you have done for me. I praise you, for you always hear my prayers and you never fail me. You never turn your mercy away from me. I love you with all of my heart and my greatest desire is to worship you in the fullness of your presence.

I hope this has helped you understand more clearly how to use God’s words as confessions during your times of prayer and worship. This can be done for healing, peace, provision or anything else God has promised in His word. God’s word cannot fail; it is an eternal constant that will always work in our lives!

Your servant in Christ,

Jim
